Surface engineering and tribology can be regarded as an interdisciplinary area where various applied sciences and engineering phenomena meet. In 1966, from well-known Jost Report, tribology was defined as “the study of interacting surfaces in relative motion and the practices related thereto.” In our studies, we focus on the piston-liner interactions in internal combustion engines with the aim of decreasing the friction coefficient which causes heat loss due to the friction, thus increasing the overall efficiency. Another concept is focused on the nucleate boiling phenomenon utilized in engine/battery cooling systems. Air bubbles are created thanks to the surface texture of the heated surface of a cooling channel, enabling an enhanced heat transfer to cool down the engine/battery more effectively. By understanding and creating new surface texture and roughness characteristics, we are aiming to develop new tribological technologies to save energy, increase the safety, reliability, and life of machines.
